Impact Outdoor Enthusiast Program lets wounded veterans in Wisconsin enjoy nature-based activities at no cost

The Impact Outdoor Enthusiast Program in Wisconsin offers wounded veterans the opportunity to engage in nature-based activities at no cost. With its abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities and year-round natural wonders, Wisconsin is an ideal destination for veterans seeking to reconnect with nature.

Through the Impact Operation Outdoor Enthusiast program, wounded veterans can participate in activities like hunting and fishing, partnering with fellow nature enthusiasts to reclaim their passion for the outdoors. Since its launch in 2018, the program has hosted events in various locations, including state forests, private ranches, and timber lands. For many wounded veterans, these events provide their first chance to experience the outdoors since returning from duty.

To be eligible for the Operation Outdoor Enthusiast program, veterans must have a service-connected disability rating of 30% or higher from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs or be a Purple Heart recipient.

The program offers two types of events. Guided events provide comprehensive guide services, accommodations, meals, and assistance with scouting, equipment, blinds, and game processing, including accommodations for mobility needs. Unguided events provide the site, primitive campsites, and portable restroom facilities, with the veteran responsible for hunting equipment, tents, and food. While some events may provide a meal, scouting and hunting responsibilities rest with the veteran. Veterans can bring one non-hunting assistant to accompany them on the hunt and provide support.

Veterans can register online for events across the state, including alligator, turkey, and hog hunts, deep-sea fishing trips, weekend camping, and family outings. Event participants are selected via a random computer draw.

The Impact Operation Outdoor Enthusiast program goes beyond hunting and fishing. It provides veterans with an opportunity to bond with their fellow servicemen and women, share experiences, and offer support in their recovery and rehabilitation. The therapeutic value of these outings is experienced while perched on a tree stand, casting a line from a boat, or gathering around a campfire at day's end.

The success of Impact Operation Outdoor Enthusiast relies on support from local communities and individuals. The program is funded entirely through private donations, and various ways to contribute include hosting hunts, volunteering, and providing meals.
